What is acne?
Acne is an inflammatory disorder of the pilo-sebaceous gland ( hair and oil glands) of the skin characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and nodules.

I have a lot of blackheads. What is the best treatment?
Blackheads and whiteheads are best treated by a procedure called comedone extraction. Here, the doctor extracts the blackheads under sterile precaution using sterile instruments. It is not advisable to do these procedures at salon as there is high chance of introducing infections due to unsterile instruments.
My pimples completely cleared with treatment. But now they are back! Why?
Acne is a chronic disorder which lasts up to 25-30 years of age. Hence, even after complete clearance of the lesions, it is important to use maintenance treatment as advised by your doctor.
I have pits and scars because of acne. How do I treat them?
Pits and scars are the sequelae of acne. They do not respond to tropical medications. There are various procedures available for them.
Subcision - Here, a needle is inserted under each scar and the fibrous bands binding the skin down are released. Done once in 4 weeks - 6 sessions may be required.
Dermaroller - It is a small device with multiple needles of 1.5 mm length. It is rolled on the scars after anesthetizing the skin. It causes tiny pricks on the skin which stimulates underlying collagen tissue to grow and fill up the scars.
Microdermabrasion - This is done for superficial scars. A diamond tip is used to gently abrade the top dead layers of the skin, thereby stimulating collagen synthesis and skin renewal.
Lasers - Fractional lasers can be used to treat scars.

I have black spots left over by acne. How do I get rid of them?
You can do procedures called chemical peels. Peels contain Alpha and beta hydroxy acids which peel off the dead cells and black spots. With multiple sessions, your spots will become lighter.
