The DO'S of hair care

Hair is the crowning glory of every individual's looks. Healthy, lustrous and thick hair is every person's desire, man and woman alike.

As a hair specialist working in Kochi, hair fall and hair loss problems form the bulk of my day to day consultations. Keralites has naturally curly and wavy hair and unfortunately , many people try to change the texture by opting for keratin treatments, smoothening and straightening procedures.

As a tricologist in Kochi, I see that this trend rising over last few years and this definitely contributes to hair fall by causing hair damage.

Here are a few basic tips that can be incorporated for healthy hair -

1. Use a gentle shampoo -

Use a gentle shampoo which is free from sulphates if you are in the habit of washing hair everyday. Avoid shampoos with SLS and SLES that could make the scalp dry and irritable.

2. Apply oil before hair wash -

Apply oil over the scalp and the hair shafts for 20-30 minutes before shampooing. Oil seals the gap between the cuticles, prevents direct contact between shampoo and the hair and also moisturises the scalp. You can read my earlier blog to know which hair oil is best for you by clicking on this link -

3. Dry your hair naturally -

Try as much as possible to dry hair naturally. Avoid using blow driers for prolonged duration. Even if you do use one, try to use the " cool" setting.

4. Use a wide toothed comb -

Always use a wide toothed comb to comb hair , especially if hair is still wet. Make sure the tips of the comb are blunt and not sharp and pointy.

5. Eat healthy -

This is probably the most important tip! Foods that promote good hair growth include spinach, avocados, nuts and seeds, soybeans and eggs.

As a dermatologist, I always stress on having a balanced diet as a part of my hair fall treatment regime.

Following these simple yet important tips will go a long way in maintaining healthy hair!
