Types of chemical peels

Chemical peels in Kochi

Chemical peel is a simple procedure that involves using an exfoliating agent to gently remove the dead skin cells on our body, mostly face, neck and back to get fresher looking skin. The most common reasons why we dermatologists do a chemical peel are for treating skin problems like acne or pimples, melasma, tanning, as an anti- ageing procedure or even for obtaining a skin glow.

There are different types of chemical peels. As the awareness about chemical peels in Kochi has grown by leaps and bounds, a brief description about the two basic types of peels are being discussed here,

As a dermatologist in Kochi, I am often asked this question whenever i suggest a peel for my patients- " Doctor, will my skin peel off?" The main fear is whether the peeling will be very obvious and severe enough for others to notice.

The answer to this is in the type of peel we choose to do for your skin problem.

Superficial peels-

  • These are peels which do not cause visible peeling of the skin to any extent.

  • This is usually done for acne, melasma and skin rejuvenation.

  • Exfoliation happens at a microscopic level and desired effect is obtained.

  • This needs more frequent sessions.

  • A few peels in this category are glycolic peel, salicylic acid peel, lactic acid peel, argipeel

Deep peels

  • These are peels that cause mild flaking off of the superficial dead skin which is visible for 5-7 days after the peel.

  • This is done for indications like melasma, anti- ageing, acathosis nigricans.

  • This is usually done once a month,

  • A few peels in this category are TCA peels, phenol peels and yellow(retinol) peels.

Peels are therefore e chosen based on the patient's skin problem, patient's preferences and occupation and the type of skin.
